Lawn installation and care

Answers to common questions about plant care, landscape design, greening, and drip irrigation from Maghakyan Botanic in Armenia.

Soil preparation is crucial for a healthy lawn. It includes clearing the area of weeds, stones, and debris. Then, loosening the soil (to a depth of 15-20 cm), improving the soil with organic matter (compost or peat), and if necessary, adjusting the pH level. Finally, leveling and compacting the soil.

The best time to plant or install a lawn is spring (April-May) or autumn (late August-September). During these periods, temperatures are mild, and there is sufficient rainfall, which promotes seed germination or the rooting of sod. Avoid summer heat or winter cold.

A lawn should be watered deeply, but not frequently. Typically 1-3 times a week, depending on the climate and soil type. The best time to water is early morning so that water reaches the roots and to avoid nighttime moisture, which can lead to diseases.

A lawn is typically fertilized 3-4 times a year: in spring (to stimulate growth), summer (to maintain color), and autumn (to prepare for winter). Use special lawn fertilizers, considering the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The optimal cutting height for grass depends on the lawn type and season. Generally, it's recommended to cut the grass to a height of 5-8 cm. Cutting too short can weaken the lawn and make it more vulnerable to diseases and weeds.

There are several methods for controlling weeds: manual removal (for small areas), applying herbicides (selective, safe for the lawn), and regular fertilization and watering to maintain a dense and healthy lawn that will outcompete weeds.

Aeration is the process of creating small holes in the soil to improve the penetration of air, water, and nutrients to the roots. It's necessary to reduce soil compaction, stimulate root growth, and prevent waterlogging. It's usually performed 1-2 times a year, depending on soil type and usage intensity.

o restore a dry or damaged lawn, start by clearing the area of dead grass. Then, additional watering, soil aeration, and sowing new seeds or installing pieces of sod in the damaged areas. Light fertilization may also be necessary.

When choosing a seed mix, consider your climate zone, the area's lighting (sunny or shaded), the purpose of use (decorative, sports, resilient), and soil type. Some mixes are designed for rapid growth, others for durability or drought resistance. Consult with a specialist.

Signs of lawn diseases include changes in grass color (yellowing, browning), the appearance of patches or rings, fungal growth, or a thin web-like coating. To prevent them, ensure proper watering (avoiding nighttime watering), balanced fertilization, regular aeration, and cutting the grass to the correct height. Remove fallen leaves and debris.
