General Information

Globe arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis “Globosa”) is a compact, evergreen and highly ornamental coniferous shrub widely used in landscape design, residential gardens, entrance areas, borders and small green spaces. It is valued for its naturally rounded crown, dense branching and year-round foliage. Globe arborvitae is particularly useful in designs that require a neat geometric shape, permanent evergreen structure and a refined appearance without frequent formal pruning.

Growth is generally slow to moderate, while mature size depends on the cultivar and growing conditions. Rounded cultivars of Thuja occidentalis combine well with rock gardens, low shrubs, ornamental grasses and flowering perennials. They can be planted as individual accents, in small groups or in repeated rows to create rhythm and structure in the landscape.

Light Requirements

Globe arborvitae performs best in full sun or light partial shade. Around 5–6 hours of sunlight per day encourages even growth and a dense, balanced crown. In deep shade, shoots may stretch, foliage can become thinner and the naturally rounded form may lose definition. In regions with very hot, dry summers, young plants may benefit from some protection from the strongest midday sun, especially during the establishment period.

Watering

During the first 1–2 years after planting, regular watering is essential for strong root establishment. The soil should remain moderately moist but never continuously waterlogged. During hot summer weather, newly planted specimens require more frequent irrigation. Deep watering is generally preferable to frequent shallow watering, allowing the upper soil layer to dry slightly between applications. A layer of organic mulch around the root zone helps reduce moisture loss, suppress weeds and maintain a more stable soil temperature.

Temperature and Humidity

Thuja occidentalis is known for good cold hardiness and can tolerate cold winter conditions. Globe cultivars are usually well suited to temperate climates, although young plants should be protected from strong drying winds and winter or early-spring sun scorch. During periods of very hot weather and low humidity, the plant becomes more sensitive to moisture stress, so consistent soil moisture is particularly important. Avoid allowing the root zone to remain dry for extended periods.

Soil and Fertilization

Globe arborvitae prefers fertile, light, well-drained and moderately moist soil. Loamy or sandy-loam soils enriched with organic matter are especially suitable. In heavy soils where water tends to collect, good drainage is essential. At planting time, mature compost or a high-quality conifer planting mix can be incorporated to improve soil structure. In spring, a balanced fertilizer formulated for conifers may be applied according to label directions. Excessive nitrogen should be avoided because it can promote soft, weak growth and reduce plant resilience.

Important Care Tips

One of the main advantages of globe arborvitae is its naturally tidy shape, so heavy formative pruning is rarely needed. In spring, remove dead, damaged or overly congested shoots. Allow enough spacing between plants so each crown can develop symmetrically with adequate air circulation. Young plants in exposed sunny locations may experience winter or early-spring foliage burn, and temporary shading can be helpful in such conditions. With proper irrigation, suitable soil and moderate feeding, globe arborvitae remains dense, symmetrical and evergreen for many years, making it an excellent choice for structured garden design and low-maintenance landscaping.
