General Information

Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as ginkgo or maidenhair tree, is a distinctive deciduous tree valued for its exceptional ornamental and botanical importance. Often described as a “living fossil” because of its ancient lineage, it is instantly recognizable by its elegant fan-shaped leaves. The foliage is fresh green through spring and summer and turns a brilliant golden yellow in autumn. Ginkgo biloba is widely used in landscape design, urban landscaping, parks, gardens, courtyards and formal public spaces. It is a dioecious species, meaning male and female reproductive structures occur on separate trees. Male cultivars are usually preferred for streets and public landscapes because mature seeds produced by female trees can develop an unpleasant odour.

Ginkgo has a slow to moderate growth rate but is exceptionally long-lived. With correct planting and care, it can remain healthy and visually impressive for many decades. Mature trees often develop a balanced pyramidal or broadly spreading crown and become especially striking during the autumn colour season.

Light Requirements

Ginkgo biloba performs best in full sun. Strong light encourages sturdy growth, a well-developed canopy and the most intense golden autumn colour. Ideally, the tree should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Young trees can tolerate light partial shade, but prolonged shade may slow growth and reduce the density of the crown.

Watering

During the first years after planting, ginkgo requires regular deep watering to establish a strong root system. The soil should remain moderately moist but never continuously waterlogged. Prolonged standing water can damage roots, making good drainage essential. Once established, Ginkgo biloba is reasonably tolerant of short dry periods, although supplemental irrigation during extended hot and dry weather helps maintain healthy foliage and consistent growth. Deep watering at appropriate intervals is preferable to frequent shallow watering.

Temperature and Humidity

Ginkgo biloba is a cold-hardy tree that tolerates a broad range of seasonal temperatures. Mature specimens can withstand cold winters as well as warm to hot summers. The species is also well suited to urban environments and is comparatively tolerant of air pollution, compacted conditions and temporary drought. Young trees benefit from a layer of organic mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate rapid soil temperature changes.

Soil and Fertilization

Ginkgo is adaptable to several soil types but grows best in deep, fertile, moderately moist and well-drained soil. Slightly acidic to neutral conditions are generally ideal, although the species has a broad tolerance once established. At planting time, mature compost or good-quality organic matter may be incorporated to improve soil structure. A balanced fertilizer for ornamental trees can be applied in spring to young specimens when growth is weak, but excessive nitrogen should be avoided because it may encourage soft growth.

Important Care Tips

When planting a ginkgo tree, consider its mature height and canopy spread and provide adequate distance from buildings, paved areas and underground utilities. Young trees may benefit from light formative pruning to develop a strong framework, while mature trees generally require only sanitary pruning to remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. Keep the root zone relatively free of weeds and apply organic mulch without piling it against the trunk. With proper site selection, irrigation and professional tree care, Ginkgo biloba becomes a long-lived, highly recognizable landscape tree that performs particularly well in contemporary gardens, avenues and urban greening projects.
