General Information

Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium) is one of the most popular and diverse autumn-flowering plants used in gardens, flower beds, borders, courtyards, containers and professional landscape design. It is valued for its long flowering season, wide range of colors and numerous flower forms. Depending on the cultivar, chrysanthemums may grow as compact rounded plants or taller bushes, while the flowers can be single, semi-double or fully double. They are especially valuable in autumn, when many other ornamental plants have already finished flowering. With the right cultivar selection and proper care, chrysanthemums can remain decorative for a long period and create dense, colorful displays in both residential and public landscapes.

Light Requirements

Chrysanthemums are sun-loving plants and flower best in bright, sunny positions. For strong growth and abundant flowering, they should ideally receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. They can tolerate partial shade, but insufficient light may cause elongated stems, a looser plant shape and fewer flowers. In very hot and dry climates, light afternoon shade can be beneficial by reducing soil overheating and helping flowers maintain their quality for longer.

Watering

Chrysanthemums require regular but balanced watering. During active growth and bud formation, the soil should remain evenly moist without becoming waterlogged. Prolonged drought may cause wilting, smaller buds and a shorter flowering period. Excess moisture, however, increases the risk of root rot and fungal diseases. Watering is best done in the morning or evening, directing water toward the soil and avoiding unnecessary wetting of leaves and flowers. Deep, controlled watering is generally more effective than frequent shallow irrigation.

Temperature and Humidity

Chrysanthemums perform best under moderate temperatures. Growth is generally favorable at around 15–24°C, while cooler autumn conditions can help prolong flowering. Excessive heat may cause rapid soil drying and reduce flower longevity. Good air circulation is important, especially in dense plantings. In humid conditions, avoid keeping foliage wet for long periods and monitor plants for fungal diseases such as leaf spots or mildew.

Soil and Fertilization

Chrysanthemums prefer fertile, loose and well-drained soil. The soil should retain enough moisture to support active growth while allowing excess water to drain freely. When planting, incorporating mature compost or well-decomposed organic matter can improve soil structure and nutrient availability. A balanced fertilizer containing nitrogen can be used during early vegetative growth, while phosphorus- and potassium-rich feeding is more useful during bud formation and flowering. Excess nitrogen may produce lush foliage at the expense of flowers, so fertilization should always be moderate and matched to the plant’s growth stage.

Important Care Tips

To encourage a dense, well-branched plant, the growing tips of young chrysanthemums can be pinched back periodically until mid-summer. Removing faded flowers helps maintain a neat appearance and can extend the overall ornamental period. Plants should be spaced well enough to allow air movement, and foliage should be checked regularly for aphids, spider mites and fungal problems. In colder regions, perennial chrysanthemums may benefit from mulching around the root zone before winter. With proper sunlight, irrigation, feeding and shaping, chrysanthemums become one of the most attractive autumn garden plants and are an excellent choice for flower beds, containers, borders and landscape design projects.
